Bangalore: The city’s power system collapsed even before the monsoon. So, does Bescom have a contingency plan for the rainy months ahead?

Yes, asserts Bescom managing director Bharat Lal Meena. The plan is “having adequate stocks of poles and other materials.’’ Is that all? What about a proper plan to prevent power shutdowns whenever there’s a downpour? “What can we do,’’ Meena shrugs. “We can’t do anything against nature,’’ he adds.

When told about the situation in Mumbai, which also receives heavy rain but does not have Bangalore’s power woes, Meena had an explanation: “Ninety per cent of the cabling is underground. Here, most is overhead.’’
