With the World Environment Day around the corner, various environmental organisations-be it government, quasi-government or autonomous- are conducting myriad awareness programmes, rallies and nature-centric exhibitions to sensitise the public about the need to protect the environment.

But this time around, it is not just going to be limited to a day-long event. The environmental organisation called SOS Children’s Village in association with Eco-Watch is planning to launch the ‘World Environment Month’- a series of initiatives between June 4 and July 9.

Addressing a press meet in Bangalore on Thursday, environmentalist Suresh Heblikar said the programme will see the participation of nearly 500 schools across the State. “The activities- undertaken to instill social and environmental responsibility in children -includes workshops and spotting polluting vehicles,” said Mr Heblikar.

A film produced by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on Western Ghats will also be telecast on June 5. Chandana T V will show the film at 8.30 pm whereas DD1 will telecast it on on June 6 at 7.30 pm. KSPCB is also conducting a series of competitions for children on themes related to environment.

Meanwhile, Rotary Bangalore Midtown is undertaking a tree planting exercise at Gottigere in Bannerghatta Road and distribution of pamphlets about conservation of birds.

Trees in your name

You can also have a tree in your own name or your family’s name by merely sponsoring a sapling for Rs 350. A Bangalore-based environmental organisation ‘Alt.tech foundation’ is now offering to nurture and grow trees for people who wish to do their bit to restore nature to its old form.
