Bangalore IT exports jump 35%

Software exports from Bangalore, India's IT hub, has jumped by 35 per cent to Rs 22,000 crore (Rs 220 billion) in 2004-05, as against Rs 16,300 crore (Rs 163 billion) in the previous fiscal, Union IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran said on Monday.

Bangalore, home for major software exporters like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Wipro, besides several multinationals like IBM and HP, has seen a jump of 46 per cent in software exports at Rs 16,300 crore in 2003-04, as against Rs 12,400 crore (Rs 124 billion) in the previous fiscal.

"The export figures are provisional, as on date. It is expected to grow further," B V Naidu, director, Software Technology Parks of India told PTI.

He said the final tally of the city's software exports would be released later this month.

Maran said Bangalore attracted 198 new IT firms in 2004-05, which included seven electronic hardware manufacturers.

A total of 168 software firms set up shop in the city during the previous fiscal, he said.

Bangalore has over 1,100 software companies, employing over 200,000 professionals, which include nearly 50,000 people in the BPO sector.
