Heavy rain causes flooding, power cuts in city

BANGALORE: Heavy rain lashed the city on Sunday leaving several areas of the city flooded.

The thundershowers lasted till evening and residents of Mysore Road, Chamarajpet and Peenya complained that the roads were flooded and had affected traffic for almost nine hours. In some areas, residents had to spend the entire Sunday clearing rainwater that had entered their houses.

Many motorists were also stranded on the busy Hosur Road, Mysore Road, Bannerghatta Road, Vijayanagar and Magadi Road that were flooded by the unseasonal rains. People called up this paper complaining of flooding on the Ring Roads near Mysore Road too. They said they found it difficult to drive on the flyover too.

The Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) was busy clearing roads where trees had fallen due to heavy rains. According to BCC employees, the control room received three complaints of falling trees from Binny Road in Vijayanagar and 7th Main in Padmanabhanagar.

Meanwhile, a major portion of the city plunged into darkness due to the power cuts that occurred because of the heavy rains.

Most parts of the city including Padmanabhanagar, Jayanagar, Banashankari, Peenya, Chickpet, Indiranagar, Koramangala, Chandra Layout, Banaswadi, Viveknagar had no power till midnight. With the showers, the temperatures dipped to as low to 23 degree Celsius. The meteorological department has predicted more rains for the next 24 hours.
