Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BMP) ambitious 1,000 km road asphalting project will come under the Karnataka Lokayukta scanner.

Lokayukta Justice N Venkatachala has set up a separate engineering cell, which will carry out surprise checks on the quality of the project. The cell is equipped with a mobile quality checking van with all necessary equipments to conduct quality check on the spot.

The Lokayukta took this decision after reviewing the ongoing Rs 110 crore black-topping project recently. “I will personally inspect the project sites and verify the quality of the work,” Justice Venkatachala told Deccan Herald.

Besides, the Lokayukta has also issued guidelines on implementing the project. “I have given them all details on the method to be followed to asphalt roads. The BMP should follow these guidelines otherwise action will be taken against BMP officials,” he added. He said that he had also instructed BMP Commissioner Jothiramalingam to ensure that the project was completed without any delay, besides maintaining quality.

BMP Chief Engineer Rame Gowda said that all information pertaining to the road project has been uplinked on the BMP’s website www.bmponline.org to ensure transparency. “Anybody can ascertain the progress of the work and can download any information,” he added.
