Forget the gym, get to Cubbon Park
A healthy lifestyle has become a positive trend in Bangalore today. A marathon runner has begun daily free classes in Cubbon Park.

Arockiyaswamy Jayaraj runs after his dreams. Literally! He’s 50 plus and he’s an international marathon runner, who aims at popularising marathon races in the country. He coaches many Bangaloreans in aerobics and other fitness exercises and trains many long-distance runners too. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that these classes are held in our very own Cubbon Park.

The Classic Joggers, Aerobic Health and Fitness Club at Cubbon Park was started in May and conducts camps for people of all ages. So how did he hit upon the idea of starting this unique club? The public’s conception of exercise has changed dramatically over the past 20 years, he says. ‘Being athletic is now a status symbol’, he says. By following the one-hour-a-day exercise programme, the free camp may just be your choice to a healthy living.

There are presently about 150 members who learn these techniques every morning from Jayraj. You begin to wonder if they are permanent members and he quickly replies, ‘Early risers who come to breathe in some fresh air in the park, are my only students. The aerobics techniques are very simple and effective, if practiced regularly,’ says Jayaraj.

While exercise is only one positive health trend among many, it appears to have significant effects on lowering risk of heart disease. It is with this aim in mind that Jayaraj is working toward building a healthier society and at no extra cost. Life sure seems to have begun after 40 for this energetic man, who is trained in aerobics from Auckland and has travelled to more than 60 countries.
He has participated in the Bangalore city half marathon in 1998 and would love to introduce the same in the country.

His laurels include the Phoenix Arizona International Athlete of the year organised by the Athletes International Ministries Banquet in 1998 at Phoenix. For details contact Jayaraj on 2548 7756 or 2558 7237.
