BANGALORE: Trucks loading and unloading vegetables and fruits and playing loud music even at midnight has left residents of Sreekanteshwar Nagar and other surrounding areas totally disturbed.

The Agriculture Produce Marketing Corporation (APMC) Yard here starts its activities in the wee hours waking up the entire neighbourhood.

That’s not all. The vendors of this wholesale market throw solid and organic waste in and around residential areas such as Ashokapuram, Sreekanteshwar Nagar and Shankar Nagar due to which there is traffic congestion and foul smell in the entire area.

In spite of residents complaining to the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) several times but no action has been taken. A resident of Sreekanteshwar Nagar says: ‘‘We have been facing this problem for the past six years. We have forgotten to inhale fresh air thanks to the uncollected garbage.’’

Another resident says: ‘‘In the name of Rajyothsava celebrations, these vendors and truck drivers played loud music for five full days. This is the height of all kinds of pollution,’’ she added.

Mahalakshmi Layout Residents Association wrote several letters to BCC and other officials requesting to change the location of the market but in vain. ‘‘We approached them several times. They promised that something would be done. Nothing has been done till now,” said a member of the association.

A resident of Ashok Nagar added, ‘‘Once the market is shifted other problems will get automatically solved. Unless and until that is done the area will not improve.’’
