BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation’s (KSRTC) modern three-tier bus terminal at Byatrayanpura on Mysore Road, which is nearing completion, will be functional by the end of January 2005.
KSRTC Managing Director M.R. Sreenivas Murthy told this website’s newspaper that this inter-state bus terminus with commercial and recreational facilities was being built to decongest the main Kempe Gowda Bus Station which is currently cramped. Arrival, departure and parking of all buses going southward to places like Mysore, Madikeri, Ooty, Kerala, will be gradually shifted to the new terminal thereby creating more space for other buses at the central bus stand, he added.
According to KSRTC Chief Civil Engineer Jagadish Chandra, initially 600 buses will be shifted to the new terminal including Mysore bound non-stop ones in February 2005.
Chandra said that the total project cost was an estimated at Rs 20 crore with Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) chipping in Rs 10 crore as loan assistance. Simplex is the contractor and SPAN are the consultants for the project he added.
This terminal built on nine acres of land has three levels with the maintenance depot at the bottom, arrival and departure at the second level and the city feeder service bus bay at the uppermost level, which is alligned with the exit towards Mysore Road. The terminal is built to handle 1,700 buses per day, Chandra said.
When fully operational, the terminal will boast of a 70-car and 200 two-wheeler capacity (4700 sqm) parking lot, pedestrian subway, Yatri Nivas restaurant, shower rooms, commercial complex, large concourse & waiting lounge, apart from the other essential amenities. The pedestrian subway ensures that people’s lives are not endangered by the buses moving within the terminal.
As the terminal includes a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus bay with feeder services to all major areas of the city and is also located at a stone’s throw from the proposed Bangalore Metro Rail station, it will be well connected. Provision has also been made for autorickshaw and taxi stands.
