Missing the woods for the trees

While I am not condoning the attack on the media one bit, the real perpetrators of this violence, members of the so-called 'Kannada Rakshana Vedike' have been conveniently allowed to get-away scotfree. Employees of the theatre are soft targets for the police to pick on. Wish they would show some guts in rounding up the rabble-rousers.

Assault on media persons: 12 held
The Hindu

The HAL Police on Saturday arrested 12 persons, including some workers of the Innovative Multiplex, on the charge of assaulting media persons. The police released them after they furnished bail.

Yesterday, a photojournalist and a private television channel cameraman were assaulted in front of the Innovative Multiplex.

Those, who assaulted the photojournalist and the cameraman, also chased away a few reporters who had gone there to cover a protest by a group of Kannada activists against the screening of an English film at the multiplex.

The assault on the media persons came after the Kannada activists threw stones at the multiplex in which an employee of the multiplex was injured.

Condemned

The Press Club of Bangalore, the Photojournalists' Association and the Bangalore Reporters' Guild have condemned the attack on the media persons. They said the attack on the media persons was equal to an "attack on the fundamental right of expression".

In a letter to the city Police Commissioner, S. Mariswamy, they demanded that deterrent action be taken to prevent such attacks on media persons in the future.
