Friends of Cubbon Park

Initiating a new bond
via Deccan Herald

How often do we set out to explore and observe our parks. Not very often. Except for die-hard nature lovers, parks like Cubbon Park and Lal Bagh are only places of recreation for the rest of us. Even prominent trees in bloom and little colourful creatures such as butterflies miss our attention.

As a way to draw attention on the natural and cultural heritage of Cubbon Park, Centre for Environment Education (CEE) along with the state Department of Horticulture and ING Vysya, has launched the ‘Friends of Cubbon Park’ programme. The initiative, which is still in its infancy, has been designed to provide an opportunity for school children and general public to observe and explore the heritage structures, flora and fauna of Cubbon Park through a series of interactions.

“The initiative is to make people aware of the value of Cubbon Park, it’s history and bio-diversity. We want to promote awareness about practices like throwing litter and making noise, which is detrimental to the health of the park,” says Sunil Jacob, programme officer, CEE.

As part of the initiative, a colourful brochure, containing various aspects of the park like its history, heritage buildings, trees, butterflies and birds, has been brought out. It also contains certain dos and don’ts in public spaces. For children, there are tips on bird and plant watching and measuring the height of a tree with little effort.

A series of activities and environmental games have been planned by CEE for students to hone their nature observation skills. Last month, about 100 children took part in a similar exercise in Cubbon Park. As part of the programme, CEE is also spreading out to colleges to spread the message of conservation of the park and to elicit help from students in facilitating activities with children.

The latest activity for children (in the age group of nine to 12 years) was held yesterday at Cubbon Park. Those interested in becoming Friends of Cubbon Park can contact Sunil Jacob or Nandini at CEE, 143, Infantry Road, Bangalore 560001 or call: 22869094 or 22869907. Email: vrc@ceeindia.org
