Strong winds shoo away city's rains

Strong winds shoo away city's rains

Weathermen say the city will receive only a mizzle and heavy rain is likely in west coast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bangalore, has forecast a drizzle, in some cases rainfall, measuring up to 2 cm, for the city. However, heavy south-west monsoon showers have been forecast over the west coast.
According to IMD, Bangalore, director, A Muthachami, going by the prevailing strong wind patterns, the city could expect a drizzle, intensifying once in a while. But the west coast will receive heavy rainfall measuring up to 10-15 cm, he added.
During active monsoon, Bangalore receives less rainfall, while the west coast, including the Western Ghats region, reports heavy rains.
The IMD has already issued warnings to the west coast, stating that heavy rainfall is likely in the the days to come. The south-west monsoon entered Karnataka on May 25 and became active across the state, including Bangalore, by June 1.
"In the forthcoming days, parts of south and north interior Karnataka will receive more rainfall as strong winds are prevailing over the west coast. The dynamic wind pattern will not allow Bangalore to get heavy rainfall as the strong winds will subsume it. The same pattern is prevailing over Tamil Nadu, where the eastern part will not get good rainfall. All this phenomenon is due to the topography,'' Muthachami added.
IMD officials also pointed out that the 2 cm rainfall forecast is more than sufficient for Bangalore as the city's present infrastructure is incapable of handling heavier rain. On May 31, the city received 6 cm rainfall, leaving it in disarray and snuffing out the life of a six-year-old boy, Abhishek, who was washed away in a flooded drain.
