Pleasant days ahead, sans rain

Pleasant days ahead, sans rain

Bangalore: The city enjoyed a cool and windy night on Friday and a cloudy day on Saturday with hardly any rain. The pleasant weather came as a pleasant weekend surprise. The meteorological department said the weather will remain so for a couple of days. It is a trait of an active monsoon and is dominated by light drizzles and low temperature.
Wind speed was around 40 km/hour; minimum temperature came down to 18 degree Celsius, the maximum being around 28. Showers can be expected in a week’s time. “The weather will be like this for a few more days. Drizzles, cloudy skies and strong winds are a feature of active monsoon. When monsoon is active in coastal Karnataka, we get light rain here. Towards the end of this phase, we will get rain again,” said department director A Muthuchami.
The south-west monsoon has, in fact, already hit Karwar and Mangalore. Rain is expected in Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra anytime between June 10 and 15, a top Met official said in Mumbai.
“Since the monsoon currents were weak after cyclone Aila hit West Bengal and Orissa, monsoon hit Karwar six days after it reached Mangalore,” deputy director general R V Sharma said. Goa on Saturday had its first feel of pre-monsoon rain. Sharma said the monsoon currents are expected to advance towards Goa from Karwar soon.
The South-West monsoon set in at Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 20 and Kerala on May 23 — almost a week before time. But the currents slowed down after cyclone Aila hit West Bengal.
BE CAREFUL
While doctors say precautions are a must to deal with sudden change in temperature and diseases that monsoon is known to bring along, one must also be careful of open drains and manholes.
Their prescription is this: don’t get wet, avoid street food, cut fruits and juices, and always boil drinking water.
Residents have been asked to inform the BBMP if they notice more mosquitoes breeding in their area. In case of prominent symptoms like high fever, a checkup for malaria, dengue, chikungunya and gastroentritis should be done.
