Sunday’s rain did not cause much trouble in the city

BANGALORE: It is time Bangaloreans braced themselves for the monsoon, which will glide over the State by the end of the month or in the first few days of June. The Meteorological Department’s projections point out that the monsoon winds will hit Kerala by May 26.

“Karnataka witnesses monsoon about five days after the Kerala monsoon,” explained A. Muthuchami, Director, Indian Meteorological Department. It is, however possible, according to him, that it may arrive a little earlier than expected. And as usual the city may expect water-logging and incidents of falling trees and electric poles.

While the city has seen a week of inconsistent weather through the day — daytime heat alternating with evening showers and drastically low temperatures by night. The Meteorological Department confirms that this is a trend which will not continue for long, now that the monsoon will soon be in full form. “All temperatures are bound to dip,” says Mr. Muthuchami.

The maximum of 31.7 degrees Celsius on Monday and minimum temperature of 19.3 degrees Celsius in the city, will perhaps decrease by a degree in the coming few days according to projections by the Meteorological Department.

Areas around the Bengaluru International Airport saw a maximum temperature of 31.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 18.2 degrees. The State is witnessing a spate of easterly winds. But Mr. Muthuchami says that in a few days the prevailing westerly winds will bring even cooler temperatures. Rainfall in the city was recorded at 2.8 mm and at 9.4 mm around BIA.

However, rain did not cause too much trouble in the city. Most control rooms of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) reported no complaints of tree fall or flooding.
