BANGALORE: One of the congested spots of Bangalore is all set to become a glitchfree road. We are talking about the ever-congested Sheshadri Road- Hudson Circle stretch, which will become a signal-free way, open to vehicles in a week.
The BBMP is all set to open two underpasses, one each at Maharani College junction and KR Circle junction in the next few days. If everything goes according to plan, the Maharani Circle underpass will be open for traffic by Tuesday while the work at KR Circle junction and the underpass is expected to be completed in a week’s time.
A formal inauguration of these two projects will be taken up after May 16, when the poll code is lifted. Work on the underpass using pre-cast elements, at the junction of Palace Road and Sheshadri Road, near Maharani’s College commenced a couple of months ago and traffic was put to inconvenience with the ongoing work. The underpass will be open for traffic in the next two days. The construction of underpasses will enable twoway signal-free vehicular movement on Palace Road between State Bank of Mysore Circle and Basaveshwara Circle.
K R Circle With the construction of rotary (elliptical pathway), underpasses and subways at these junctions, the stretch from Sheshadri Road to Hudson Circle will become signal-free. The rotary at K R Circle is being created by the traffic engineering cell of BBMP on an experimental basis. This happens to be the first designed rotary in the city.
The work on the underpass at KR circle will take some more time to complete. BBMP sources said this underpass will be open for traffic before May 20. While BBMP is confident of reducing the congestion here in the absence of signals after May 20, road-users feel that the rotary and the underpass at the Circle will add to the existing traffic chaos.
BBMP chief engineer (major roads) T N Chikkarayappa, said that Sheshadri Road will be open for traffic in a couple of days.
“Sheshadri Road underpass work near Maharani’s College will finish in about two days. The last phase of the work is in progress and when the flooring is done, we will open it for traffic on a trial basis,” said Chikkarayappa. BBMP says it will not wait for formal inauguration.
