BANGALORE: For anyone, who has passed painful moments stuck in Bangalore’s notorious traffic situations (which would be pretty much everyone), here is good news. The second phase of “B-TRAC 2010” networking of 204 traffic junctions, an initiative of the Bangalore Police, with BSNL as the connectivity partners, is well on track.
Traffic policies would be speeded up and congestion could well become a thing of a horrific past. As per the BSNL Data Service team, the second phase of networking will be completed by July.
First-phase recap Phase-one of the project which included 163 junctions was concluded in September 2008.
Cubbon Road junction, Kamaraj Road, Minsk Square, GPO, ISRO junction, BEL junction, junctions at Jayanagar, J P Nagar and Marathalli are few of the junctions that were covered in the first phase.
Enter Phase II Phase two was kicked off in January 2009.
Many of the first-phase and second-phase functions are being upgraded to support surveillance cameras. Apart from this, the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) has been upgraded with additional networking equipment by BSNL, Bangalore for the second phase of networking.
BSNL, Bangalore, putting in an investment of Rs 6 crore has entered into an agreement with KRDCL (Karnataka Road Development Corporation) to execute the project. BSNL is executing the connectivity in coordiation with BEL, ZYCOM, Traffic Police and BBMP.
BSNL provided end-to-end solution from traffic junction to TMC by laying new copper, fibre cables across Bangalore and linked them with its exhaustive network.
However, metro and the road-widening projects have impacted many of the cables laid for this purpose. “In more than 30 per cent of cases, the cables that were laid were disrupted as these roads came up for further expansion or were covered under Metro project. This added to the BSNL project cost to wire the junctions repeatedly,” said an official from Data Service Team, Bangalore Telecom District, BSNL.
In the outdoor unit provided at the traffic junction, BSNL provided network equipment along with UPS to deliver bandwidth for applications such as traffic signals and cameras. Some junctions are equipped to deliver bandwidth up to 12 Mbps on copper to even meet future requirements.
“All the network elements are deployed in a totally manageable network and Bangalore BSNL has deployed a special team to work exclusively on this project,” he added.
Follow the leader “The success of B-TRAC networking has led other cities to think about replicating the system. Hyderabad has also started the implementation.
Ahmedabad is on-line. Bangalore BSNL has been getting enquiries from many other cities. And the technical inputs to replicate the project across the country in major cities will be provided by the Bangalore Telecom District” he further adds.
“The project has covered 90 per cent of roads in the city so far.
Karnataka is the first state to implement this project. We have been receiving calls from other cities about the working of the system and some of them are planning to replicate it as well,” said, Praveen Sood, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic and Security.
Speaking about the project, Shubendu Ghosh, Principal General Manager, Bangalore Telecom District, says, “It is not just connectivity but through this project we want to provide an end-to-end solution for the public”.
