‘There is currently a cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu’

This is responsible for rain in south interior Karnataka: Muthuchami

Bangalore: This season of thundershowers that has brought about a welcome dip in temperature (but also a fair share of civic problems) is just a sampler of things to come.

The sporadic rainfall over the last few days is not about to abate any time soon and is a precursor to the monsoon expected to set in within a few weeks, according to the Meteorological Department.

Strong winds, thunderclaps and evening downpours characterise this pre-monsoon season, where cyclonic activity is intense, explained A. Muthuchami, Director of the meteorological centre here. “There is currently a cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu which is responsible for rain in south interior Karnataka, including Bangalore.”

He added that the city can expect thundershowers in the evening for the next two or three days.

The good news is that the temperature is set to dip to just 20 degrees Celsius in the next two days.

“The next couple of weeks will see a similar pattern of rainy spells followed by dry weather,” Mr. Muthuchami said. Rainfall has not been particularly high this month, recording between less than 1 mm to 17 mm over the last week.

The destruction, most commonly in the form of falling trees and electric poles, owes to high wind speeds, he added.

Outside the monsoon months, May is the rainiest month for Bangalore, which records an average of 120 mm of rainfall. On a single day, almost exactly one hundred years ago on May 6, 1909, the city received a record 154 mm of rain.
