Who or what sparked off the blaze in the Cavuery handicrafts emporium on Tuesday last?
Though police are declining to categorically pin the blame on any cause, they are not ruling out sabotage by insiders.
The jurisdictional police are working on various theories. One theory is that the window on the first floor was open at the time of fire and someone could have thrown some burning object inside before fleeing.
That the blaze occurred when the showroom had closed for the annual stock-taking exercise, has lent credence to the sabotage theory.
Jurisdictional Ashoknagar police inspector Udhay Bhaskar said that there indeed was a possibility of sabotage. But investigating officers have not found concrete evidence yet, he added.
"The chief electrical inspector has checked the place and is suspecting a short circuit. We are waiting for a report, based on which our investigations will go ahead," he said.
He added that the fire extinguishers had caused 10% damage to certain artifacts, but the loss of property due to the fire is not much. "Most of the artifacts were covered with plastic."
"We took up a fire accident case. They had not mentioned the reason for the fire. Investigations are going on to determine the cause," Bhaskar said.
Mohammad Salauddeen, deputy general manager, Cauvery Emporium, said the estimated loss is about Rs14 crore.
