BANGALORE: Malleshwaram constituency, which comprises of some of the oldest residential areas of Bangalore, was once known as a safe abode for senior citizens. But over the years, it has witnessed rapid commercialisation and urbanisation and senior citizens do not feel safe anymore.
The major problem in the constituency is traffic. Narrow lanes and heavy commercial activities have hampered the flow of traffic in and around the constituency.
With increasing number of vehicles and influx of people, roads are getting congested. Walking on them is now a challenging task.
Absence of proper traffic signals and bad patches of roads in the constituency add to the problem, feel the residents. Malleshwaram 8th cross is always abuzz with commercial activity and it is a nightmare for walkers, with most of the pavement space being encroached upon by vendors. It is riskier for senior citizens.
The constituency is home to a large number of educational institutions, and school children do not have access to safe roads.
While people in core and posh layouts of the constituency do not have much to despair about, residents in Subramanyanagar, Ashwathnagar, Vyalikaval and Guttahalli face problems related to garbage disposal and blocked drains. It was promised long ago that the Malleshwaram market would be renovated. But there is no sign of this project taking off.
Also, footpaths need to be improved across the constituency.
On the infrastructure front, there are several things to be done and the residents hope these will taken care of by the authorities.
The constituency has several active residents welfare associations and thanks to their commitment, many projects have been implemented. Apart from the core Malleshwaram area, there are other posh areas including RMV extension, Sadashivanagar and MS Ramaiah Nagar.
Parts of Rajajinagar II stage, Subramanyanagar, Mathikere Extension, Ashwathnagar, Gokula Extension, Mathikere, Vyalikaval, Rajamahal, Guttahalli and Ranganathapura also come under this constituency.
Important landmarks in the constituency are Sankey tank, Indian Institute of Science and Chowdaiah Memorial Hall. There are important temples.
