'Kendra Sarige' routes revised

'Kendra Sarige' routes revised
Bangalore, D H News Service:
Introduced on February 10, to ply in the clockwise and anti-clockwise direction, with a frequency of every ten and 15 minutes respectively, it was flagged off by the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa

Kendriya Sarige, aka ‘HO-HO’ (Hop-On:Hop-Off) blue-line and orange-line Volvo and the Big 10 buses in the Central Business District introduced by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) amidst much excitement has come cropper.

Introduced on February 10, to ply in the clockwise and anti-clockwise direction, with a frequency of every ten and 15 minutes respectively, it was flagged off with much fanfare by the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and hoped to strengthen bus connectivity between various points in the Central Busines District (CBD).

However, two months down the line the service, with nine buses on each route runs empty with a dismal public response to the transportation initiative, which was introduced to discourage motorists from using personal mode of vehicles.

To set this right, the State run transport undertaking has now connected the service to the Kempegowda Bus Station (KBS) hoping to achieve the much needed response.

K Vishwanath, Chief Traffic Manager (Operations), BMTC said, “The primary aim of the service, like the Vajra buses is to make public transport more attractive to those travelling by cars and two-wheelers. The initial public response was not up to our expectations. So, we have connected it to the Kempe Gowda Bus Station.”

The ‘HO-HO’ concept planned in association with the Centre for Public Policy, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore is a unique initiative to decongest City roads by making world class public transport more acceptable to car users.

Prof Ashwin Mahesh, IIM(B) added, “The concept is to encourage use of buses, aided with initiatives such as ‘Park and Ride’ where a motorist can hop on to a bus from a parking lot. People would take time to realise the advantages, but it is the solution for Bangalore city which is congested.”
