Some auto drivers say fare should be reduced

Bangalore: Surprising but true. A section of auto drivers in the city have asked the regional transport authority to reduce minimum fare from the current Rs 14 to Rs 10.
Members of Karnataka Rajiv Gandhi Auto Chalakara Vedike claim reduced bus fare is affecting their business. Vedike general secretary B Chandrashekhar said with price of LPG falling by Rs 8, and fuel prices following suit, other means of public transport have become cheaper options. “We want the minimum fare up to 2 km to be reduced to Rs 10, and Rs 5 charged for every kilometre thereafter instead of Rs 6,” he said.
However, members of other auto drivers’ unions are against such a move. Adarsha Auto Drivers Union president M Manjunath said though price of LPG has reduced, other commodities like rice are costlier. “There is no question of reducing fares when cost of living is increasing,” he said.
