The city police has assured people that an attack like the one in a Mangalore pub will not be allowed here.

Promising strict action against troublemakers on Valentine’s Day, police commissioner Shankar M. Bidari said the police will not allow any untoward incident on February 14.

Though Mr Bidari didn’t reveal what action they are likely to take against Pramod Mutalik’s announcement of a mangalsutra or rakhi drive, he clearly said that no ‘moral policing’ will be allowed. “It is not right to reveal what action will be taken on February 14. There is still time and we will take all possible steps to instil confidence among the citizens,” Mr Bidari said. According to sources, the police might resort to preemptive detention of Ram Sene activists, a day before Valentine’s Day, to avert possible “moral policing”. Interestingly, Mutalik does not speak of the ‘mangalsutra or rakhi’ drive in his memorandum submitted to the police. It was only after submitting the memorandum that he announced the drive openly. Some officials say this was deliberate.
