Govt looking at alternatives

Govt looking at alternatives
Bangalore, DHNS:
The High Speed Rail Link (HSRL) to the Bangalore International Airport would be a huge drain on the States exchequer and hence alternative road options were being explored, revealed, Prof M N Sreehari, Traffic, Transport and Infrastructure Adviser to the State government.

“The project costs a whopping Rs 18,000 crore. We are finding alternative roads to BIAL which would save the travel time of the passengers instead of implementing the HSRL,” he said.

Disclosing that the State Government has recommended the Centre to amend Motor Vehicles Act, Sreehari said that it had been sought to fix the validity for driving licenses at five years so that the holder needs to renew it every five years. Further, those above 55 should need to renew the licence every year.

Model Road Zones with best signboards, traffic signals, lighting, appropriate road markings and other vital components will be developed in the city within the next three to six months. Other roads will be upgraded based on it, he said.

73 per cent increase

Every year 3.5 lakh vehicles are added to the city roads and 1,250 vehicles registered every day. In 2008 alone, there has been a steep increase of 73 per cent in the number of two-wheelers across the city, Sreehari pointed out in his presentation.

The creation of a database with crucial information pertaining to all RTOs, a common procedure in other countries has also been recommended.

The City had more than 600 unscientific speed breakers. There are plans to introduce, Intelligence Transport System (ITS), an economic, viable and traffic management system for smooth traffic movement, he revealed.
