CM slams officials for shoddy works
DH News Service, Bangalore:
A fiery chief minister B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday took the officials of the various civic agencies to task for the shoddy implementation of public works in Bangalore.

He said the officials and contractors cared little for quality work but were still getting paid for it. “You are drawing salary from the treasury. Are officials meant for tending donkeys (katthe kayoka)” asked the chief minister.

He said this while participating in a programme held at the BBMP office premises to inaugurate development projects.

Yeddyurappa pointed out that contractors asphalted roads that were in good condition and ignored the roads that had potholes like craters.

They take 10 years to complete a project which could be executed within a year, so that they could draw excess money from the government.

“Roads develop potholes within days after they are laid or tarred. Buildings develop cracks soon after you build them. Bridges collapse. Why do you need an engineering degree to do such a clumsy job?

Can anybody remove even a single stone from the KRS dam which was constructed by Sir M Visvesvaraiah? You have been given an engineering degree not to graze donkeys,” the chief minister said.

Several top officials of various agencies, including the BBMP and BDA, were present at the function.
The CM said officials and contractors were under the impression that they could do anything and get away. “We are watching their mischief. We will not accept injustice. We want quality work within a short time. The BBMP commissioner should henceforth send me the officials’ work diary once in a week,” he said. Lokayukta trapping the corrupt officials had indeed brought shame to the government, he added.

“Each corporation has been sanctioned Rs 100 cr. In some places no work has begun. Do you need an IAS or KAS to commence such work. I have given freedom to improve infrastructure of cities. I feel there is a lack of sincerity and will power to work,” the CM said.
