In a show of ‘self-help’, more than 300 residents of the area around Agara lake, took part in a drive to clean it. Environmentalist Dr Yellappa Reddy said, “I am happy to see this kind of huge participation of local communities to preserve lakes. This should be a hint to the government that instead of giving the lakes to big private players, it should give them to local communities for their maintenance.” Sohail Mohamed, a resident of HSR layout, said, “My hobby is to look out for birds. There is a perceptible decline in the number of birds visiting this lake. This cleanliness drive should help restore the natural balance of the lake.”
Around 200 school children were also part of the campaign. “This was an attempt to instil among students a sense of the importance of water and civic issues,” said Rajgopal, president of Swamy Vivekananda Association. The other organisations which participated were the Koramangala Initiative and the India Awakening Society.
