Contractor’s gain, BBMP’s loss

Contractor’s gain, BBMP’s loss

The pay and park system, which has made a re-entry in ‘select’ places of the city, is a mischief by some citizen-unfriendly BBMP officials. We conducted a test drive on MG Road, St Mark’s Road, Ali Askar Road and Koramangala to see how much moolah the contractor makes and how much he pays the BBMP. The outcome was shocking. Atul Chaturvedi gives the lowdown

When the BBMP planned to introduce parking system on these nine roads, it had estimated the contractor could make Rs 12.82 lakh every month. But, little did it realise the revenue it would earn would be peanuts.
Incidentally, a part of the Brigade Road - with space for just 85 car parking slots and which has an automated pay and park system - earns the BBMP Rs 2 lakh every month. The traders’ association on this road, which runs the scheme, too makes Rs 2 lakh and it is used for maintenance of the automated system, security guards, road and pavement.

MG ROAD
The parking slots on the road are occupied all the time between 10 am and 10 pm on all days. Number of car parking slots: 65 Number of two-wheeler parking slots:250 Parking charges per car for an hour: Rs 10 Charges per two-wheeler for an hour: Rs 2 On an average, for 10 hours, the contractor can make Rs 6,500 from car parking and Rs 5,000 from two-wheelers a day. His monthly income: Rs 3.45 lakh. He, however, pays the BBMP a meagre Rs 60,000. He has engaged eight people for collecting the parking fee and they are paid Rs 3,000 each every month. The contractor makes at least Rs 2.5 lakh on this road alone.

ALI ASKAR ROAD
This road is relatively free of traffic. The demand for parking is only during office hours on weekdays. Very few people parking their vehicles here during the weekends. On this road, we estimate the contractor can’t make more than Rs 1.5 lakh. He pays the BBMP Rs 11,000.
No of car parking slots: 85 No of two-wheeler slots: 30

KORAMANGALA, NEAR JNC
This is a busy area with a lot of eateries. It has the potential to generate a revenue of Rs 1.75 lakh every month.
No of car parking slots: 45 No of two-wheeler slots:65 From car parking alone, the contractor gets Rs 1.35 lakh and Rs 40,000 from two-wheelers. However, BBMP’s income is a mere Rs 15,000.

ST MARK’S ROAD
This is a busy area during weekdays as well as weekends as a lot of eateries are located there. Number of car parking slots: 75 Number of two-wheeler slots: 45 A chat with the parking attendants revealed their daily collection from car parking is Rs 7,500 and twowheelers Rs 1,000.The monthly revenue is Rs 2.5 lakh. What the BBMP gets is just Rs 25,000.
