A telecommunication tower installed to serve the networking needs of a leading mobile company on a residential building terrace has made daily life an ordeal for residents of Marenahalli Tank Bund area here.

For the last two years, over a hundred families have been suffering the noise pollution caused by the mammoth high decibel generator that facilitates the tower’s functioning.

The tower, which is more than 15-ft tall, is located on the third floor of a building in Jayanagar 5th block.

The generator, which switches on automatically when the voltage is low or power goes. However, the generator is on, most of the time, as the operators want to ensure better network connectivity, the residents alleged.

An airconditioner which runs on the generator power compounds the problem for the residents.

Residents allege that the owner makes a cool Rs 15,000 every month by permitting the tower and generator to be located here. The tower was installed by Aster Infrastructures for the mobile giant.

Pavithra, a 2nd year BCom student, who resides in the floor just below the tower, speaks of the excess heat and the pungent odour that pervades her house.

Some machinery landed up at the building a week ago. Fearing more noise, the residents finally submitted a petition to Police Commissioner Shankar Bidri during a grievances meet on January 13.
