The government, which has given up on the express highway project to ease traffic to the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA), is now hoping to improve connectivity to the BIA from all directions to help passengers reach it on time.

The Agenda for Bengaluru Infrastructure Development (ABIDe), a body instituted by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to give priority to infrastructure projects in the city, is looking into the plan to provide different parts of the city better connectivity to the airport.

The ABIDe in its draft master plan, Vision 2020 has proposed better connectivity to the airport from the eastern and western parts of the city to decongest Bellary Road, says Abide convener Rajeev Chandrashekhar.

“The principle of future traffic management is to have multiple corridors to reduce traffic impact on a particular road. Having a single corridor puts too much of pressure on it contributing to traffic snarls and accidents,” he explains.

He says on the eastern side better connectivity will be provided between Old Madras Road (Hoskote) and BIA via the Budhigere Road. This will help the IT hub of the city, Whitefield and its surrounding areas, giving people from these parts a short and easy way to reach BIA.

People from the Electronic City too will be able to make use of the road to reach the airport as will those who would like to bypass the city to reach Hebbal and the airport.

Yelahanka Road will be improved to connect Bellary Road from Yeshwanthpur to help commuters from Peenya, Dasarahalli, Yeshwanthpur and Malleswaram reach the airport faster.

The Hennur Road has been made two lane to ensure smooth flow of vehicles without traffic signals and connectivity between Tumkur Road and Bellary Road is also being improved. “People in Electronic City too can also make use of the NICE road to reach the airport quickly,” Mr Chandrashekhar adds.
