People living on the outskirts of Bengaluru can look forward to better roads.

The BBMP plans to convert road networks in the five newly added zones leading to major roads and national and state highways into high quality corridors.

The BBMP hopes the project will help it cope better with the increasing traffic in the city. The high quality corridors will not only be stronger, but will be able to hold a larger volume of traffic. The Rs 2,350 crore project will cover roads stretching over 422 kms in the five zones.

The civic authority is preparing detailed project reports based on a survey of the Mahadevapura, Bommasandra, Rajarajeshwari nagar, Dasarahalli and Byatarayanapura zones. The move follows a meeting of BBMP officials with Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa who directed them prepare a blueprint for improving infrastructure in newly added areas, according to BBMP sources.

The identified arterial and sub-arterial roads will be asphalted and widened. Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) will be used to acquire property to widen the roads instead of financial compensation. Roads which have not been asphalted will be provided black topping, sources added.

The proposal will be sent to the state government for inclusion in the state Budget and officials are banking on the Chief Minister's coperation in its approval and release of funds.
