Jayanagar a hub for ‘escorts’

Jayanagar, easily one of the best maintained localities in the city, and known for being a quiet, safe place for the last three decades, has now become a hub for sophisticated sex workers and eunuchs.

After dusk, high-end prostitutes also known as escorts, fluent in English, are seen behind green canopies and parks on Jayanagar roads.

Meetings of Federation of Jayanagar Residents Welfare Association is now flooded with complaints that the number of these girls has increased drastically in the past six months, says K.V. Bhaskar Murthy president of the federation.

Starting from South End Circle on RV Road, especially near 45th cross of 8th block, these sex workers are found on the 35th to 40th cross of 5th block, Nanda Theatre Road, Rose Garden Road, JP Nagar Ring Road, 10th main of 4th and 5th block. The service roads near the parks have become a threat to passersby.

“The menace starts around 7.30 pm. Though there is heavy traffic on the road, footpaths are also no longer safe, says Keshavakumar, secretary. Petty crimes like chain snatching, bag snatching and pick-pocketing too have risen consequently, Mr Murthy says.

Sometimes eunuchs pretending to be prostitutes, stop two-wheelers and fourwheelers and demand money. If the motorist refuses, the eunuchs rob them. Recently a software engineer, who reportedly stopped his vehicle mistaking a eunuch to be a prostitute, was forced to part with money. But we managed to help him, said Mr Keshavakumar.

There is a 10 to 12 per cent increase in the number of sex workers in the city every year, according to a survey by Swasthi, a health resource centre for sex workers.

There are at least 27,000 female sex workers in the city.

While regular sex workers earn between Rs 100 and Rs 2,000, sophisticated escorts who go to posh hotels and resorts, earn anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 20,000, sources say. The internet and cell phones have come as a blessing for the sex workers.
