27 detonators found at city bus station

K Ramanujam. Bangalore
Panic struck the Kempegowda Bus Station after police found an abandoned plastic carry bag that had 27 detonators in it on Friday morning. The bag was found by policemen on their routine patrol with the dog squad at Platform No 25 around 11.30 am.
Police cordoned off the area and summoned the bomb disposal squad, which discovered the detonators.
"There were 13 detonators which were wired. Another 14 were not connected to wires," a senior police officer said. The detonators were taken to an isolated area within Tulasi Park near the police station. They were kept there till experts reached the place. A constable was posted to ensure that no one went close to the bag.
The Majestic bus station area has been identified by the police as very sensitive: nearly a lakh of people move in and out of Bangalore through buses every day. The Upparpet police station, under which the bus station falls, has a regular staff of dog squads.
"I saw the bomb disposal squad and senior officers of the police cordoning off the area around 11.30 am. I did not understand what they were looking for. They took the packet which was found on the platform and left," Ramesh, an employee at the pay-and-use toilet near Platform 25, said. Detonators are used to trigger explosives that are used in mining and quarrying activities. DCP (West) B Shivakumar said the detonators will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for verification. "We will investigate the circumstances under which these reached the station. At present, we do not suspect foul play," he said.
