Nightmare at Anand Rao circle

Severe traffic congestion greeted commuters and motorists on the Anand Rao Circle flyover from Majestic on Tuesday morning. Many were caught in the traffic jam for more than an hour near Maharani College.
People say that there has been no respite from traffic jams on this stretch. "It takes more than half an hour to cross the two-kilometer stretch from Anand Rao Circle to Maharani College," said Swetha Naidu, a daily commuter on the route.
On Sheshadri Road, traffic gets clogged atop the flyover as well, especially during peak hours.
Swetha added, "The traffic congestion from Anandrao Circle towards Maharani College has become a speed-breaker for vehicular movement," she added.
The Rs26-crore flyover was constructed to ease traffic congestion but it has only aggravated the problem. "The flyover has not served the purpose at all," said Devamma, a student from Maharani College. She added that the noise also disturbs students studying in the college.
Most of the roads are already carrying vehicles beyond their capacity and volume. As per the Bangalore traffic police, the number of vehicles plying on the roads have increased five-fold between 2000 and 2008.
The closure of roads for construction will further increase the density of vehicles in the days to come.
Apart from the increased number of buses plying from Majestic, the number of private vehicles have also increased in the city. This has led to an increase in traffic congestion, explains Praveen Sood, additional commissioner of police (traffic andsecurity).
