Foggy mornings hit flights at BIA

Foggy mornings hit flights at BIA
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: Since December 10, fog has affected flight arrival and departures in Bangalore, particularly the morning schedule. On its website, BIA has posted information for air travellers as more delays are likely.
According to meteorological department director A Muthuchami, fog is expected to continue over the next two days with temperatures of 14-15 degrees C. “Inversion in lower layer surface increases atmospheric warmth with rise in temperature above 1.5 km, creating a ideal atmosphere for fog formation. With clouds from Tamil Nadu moving towards the state, we expect fog to end within two days,” said Muthuchami.
Reduced visibility makes it difficult for pilots to take off or land in foggy conditions. Visibility of 1,500-1,600 metres is necessary for operation of flights.
FOG FACTS
Fog is anticipated from November 15 to February 15 between 3 am and 8.30 am
Fog most likely to occur at BIA is ‘radiation fog’
In the interest of safety, there are regulations governing operations of aircraft during low visibility. Pilots are prohibited from landing or taking off when visibility is below a defined figure known as ‘minima’. The minima is based on the accuracy of the instrument landing system and other operational parameters.
