‘ Instead of making excuses, ‘ BBMP must expedite the work
Those accustomed to using the Jayamahal Road have been inconvenienced for over a year now due to the ongoing work on a Road Under Bridge (RUB) at the Cantonment junction which connects Mekhri circle and the Cantonment railway station.
The mud and debris dug up for the RUB has been piled high on the Jayamahal Road, proving a death trap for both pedestrians and motorists. The road which saw a great deal of traffic from the Cantonment railway station and the Shivajinagar bus stand, is today in a mess, which the authorities don’t seem to be in a hurry to clear up.
“If an infrastructure project like this one in the heart of the city is being given such little priority, one wonders how the BBMP treats other projects further away. It’s high time it woke up from its slumber and fixed the problem,” says a resident of nearby Vasanthnagar, Manikanth.
The RUB which is using push box technology, being executed jointly by the BBMP and the Railways at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore.
Dr V. Bhaskar, a commuter, says that instead of making excuses, the BBMP must work towards better coordination with the departments concerned and expedite the project.
“It should make an effort to convince other departments like Bescom, BWSSB and the traffic police to finish their part of the work as quickly as possible,” he says.
The BBMP, however, maintains things are going according to plan. “Work will be completed soon and traffic will be allowed on this stretch by the end of December. Work has been expedited and we have completed utility shifting over the last three days,” says BBMP technical adviser Jaiprasad. He explains that the retaining walls are being constructed both on the Jayamahal and Millers Road side.
“Rocks have been blasted and they are being shifted to ensure smooth flow of traffic,” he adds.
