Lakes in the city could soon breathe fresh again as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is set to come out with draft policies and guidelines to protect the depleting urban wetlands.

A biannual three-day symposium, ‘Lake 2008: Conservation and management of river and lake ecosystem’, to be held from Dec. 22, aims to bring together stake holders, research scholars and students on the issue.

Researchers at Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), IISc, are already working on the guidelines.

“The guidelines by civic agencies will not help improve the condition of wetlands here. For instance, a civic rule says no non-for est activities must be taken up close to 30 mts from a lake. But the rule does not specify from where the distance has to be measured. Due to the loopholes in the present guidelines, the symposium aims to formulate elaborate policies,” symposium convener Dr T.V. Ramachandra said.
