City, luxury cabs not on strike
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Bangalore: While a section of cab drivers plans to go ahead with a strike from Sunday midnight, several operators of luxury cabs and city radio cabs have clarified their operations will not be affected.
Karnataka State Vehicle Drivers’ Federation president Nanjundaswamy, who has called for the strike, said the federation has around 37,000 drivers and over 50,000 cabs are being used by IT and other industries in Bangalore. He said working conditions are poor and the drivers are demanding that they be brought under the labour law besides seeking leave and wages.
But owners of luxury cabs and city radio taxis said they will operate as usual. Bangalore Tourist Taxi Owners’ Association president K S Thantry said the owners have reservations from passengers. He said they would not go on strike during these times when tourism has been hit by both terrorism and economic meltdown.
Karnataka City Taxi Operators and Owners Association president T Prabhakar echoed the sentiment and said there were about 3,000 city taxis in Bangalore and they would ply as usual. Karnataka State Maxicab Owners’ and Drivers’ Association president Bhairava K Siddaramaiah said he was not aware of any strike and maxicabs are not part of the strike.
