BANGALORE: As the city reels under the threat of terror attacks, opinions among authorities seem divided on the issue of cancelling large gatherings in the city. While many organisers cancelled events based on the local police’s advice, top police officials do not yet have a policy in place to regulate the situation.
Stephen Dass, member of the NGO, Provision India and one of the organisers of United Charities Bazaar, an annual event in the city, said, “The Charities Bazaar, which was scheduled to be held on Saturday, was cancelled as per the advice of the local police authorities. Permission was obtained a few days back, but the Frazer Town police advised the cancellation of the event considering the terror threats. We were told that there might be a ban on public gatherings between December 15 and 21.” Two other events - Janapada Jatre scheduled to be held at Jayanagar and the centenary celebration of Trained Nurses Association of India at Yelahanka - scheduled for Saturday were also cancelled.
When contacted, Commissioner of Police, Shankar Bidari said, “The draft seeking approval to regulate processions, meetings and public gatherings has been submitted to the High Court and the government. The High Court may give its approval on December 9.” However, an Additional Commissioner of Police said that all large gatherings have been cancelled for an indefinite period.
Abrupt cancellation of events has caused losses to event organisers. “We have suffered huge logistical losses in the preparation of the event. Since it’s tough to re-invest, we have decided to hold the event in December 2009 only,” Stephen said.
