With each passing day, we are moving into a world of concrete, and away from the lap of nature. At such times, it’s a luxury to be closer to the therapeutic sight of nature. And, if it’s about being associated with possibly the most beautiful creation of nature -- flowers -- its more than just blissful.
Lucky are the students and members of the Bangalore Chapter of the Ohara School of Ikebana as they are in constant touch with nature’s blessing. Now even you get a chance to satisfy the green urge at this 19 year old school’s two day flower expo at Chitrakala Parishat, which begins today.
Speaking on the show, the head of the school Shyama Ganesh, the first in the state to be graduated as Sub-Grandmaster in the art of Ikebana, says “This year the emphasis is on celebration of life.
Throughout life we have different occasions , emotions, achievements and spirit of life to celebrate. When all these are depicted in the form of flowers , it is a treat to our senses.” Shayma who has been involved in this traditional 600 year old Japanese art of flower arrangement, for over 20 years says that it’s the use of empty space and asymmetrical form that distinguishes Ikebana from other decorative forms.”Ikebana is more creative and challenging unlike Western floral arrangements that are symmetrical and predictive.
It’s about creating harmony among materials, container and the setting.” The Ohara school is one of the many branches teaching Ikebana and creator of the decorative style Moribana.
“This form uses a flat container and a pin holder into which flowers are inserted.
Using the broad expanse to depict nature is its biggest draw.” Is Ikebana pursued only as a hobby or as a career option? “With growth in hospitality industry, a of students take up Ikebana as profession.” Be it for hobby or a full time career, being around these natural grandeur is definitely a joyous experience.
