Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Monday laid the foundation stone for two long-awaited flyovers — at Iblur and Agara junctions.

Unveiling the plaque for the two flyovers to be built under JNNURM, Mr Yeddyurappa said: “The Iblur junction project will cost Rs 63 crore and the Agara junction flyover Rs 31 crore.” The flyover along the Outer Ring Road at Agara junction towards Marathahalli will be a six-lane dual carriageway and the one at Iblur junction will have three lanes.

The design speed for both is 60 kmph.

The two flyovers will connect Iblur and Agara to the Outer Ring Road.

“Heavy traffic is the root cause of most of the traffic jams and accidents on the ORR,” Mr Yeddyurappa said.

“The ORR has become an arterial road today with more trucks plying on it, disturbing local commercial activity along the villages of Iblur and Agara. Hence, the flyovers have been planned to provide free-flowing connectivity on the Outer Ring Road.” BDA officials said the project is likely to be completed by October next year.

Former Union minister Ananth Kumar, home minister V.S. Acharya, higher education minister Arvind Limbavali, Bommanahalli MLA M. Sathish Reddy, Katta Subramanya Naidu, BDA commissioner Siddaiah and chairman Mahishi were among those present at the ceremony.

Mr Yeddyurappa also announced that Phase II of Metro Rail between the Peripheral Ring Road and Yelahanka and Whitefield and Katriguppe would be completed by 2010.

The proposed route would cover Nagavara, Veerannapalya, Fraser Town and residential, commercial and IT areas along Hosur Road.

The Chief Minister said that a bronze statue of Lal Bahadur Shastri would soon be installed in the city.

“I met Mr Sunil Shastri, son of the late Lal Bahadur Shastri, on Monday. I have asked BDA to identify the place to install the statue which will be brought from Mumbai.” Meanwhile, the BDA is taking up a project to repair 1,187 roads in the city at a cost of Rs 300 crore and 1,550 roads in BBMP area at a cost of Rs 700 crore.
