Your traffic woes are likely to end in just a year’s time when the fullfledged Traffic Management Centre will be ready.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Monday said the city’s traffic will be managed in a better way with the help of the TMC.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the TMC, Mr Yeddyurappa said that most of the traffic problems will be solved by January. “We will send 37 officials to Singapore to be trained in handling traffic using modern equipment.” City police commissioner Shankar Bidari said the burden on city roads has increased threefold. “The city had 160 traffic signals. We have added 90 more in 100 days and by the end of January the number will go up to 400,” he added.

Mr Bidari said that 400 surveillance cameras would be installed to monitor and regulate traffic. “At present, there are 80 cameras across the city. Ten more will be added in the near future. The number will be increased to 400 for the entire city. All the signal lights will be connected to the TMC and inputs will be used to collect data about traffic conditions. This will help us in designing an intelligent synchronised traffic signal system for major corridors and areas in the Central Business District,” he said. On the rise in mishaps on arterial roads, additional commissioner of police (traffic) Praveen Sood said the new traffic stations at Chikkajala, Whitefield, Devanahalli and Electronic City would work on checking the number of accidents. “About 30,000 commuters use Bellary Road to BIA daily.

Besides, both sides of the road are dotted with villages. Of the entire fine amount collected by interceptors in the last three months, 75 per cent came from drives conducted on Bellary Road. So five more interceptors will be added to the four existing ones on that route,” he added. The total fine collected in the city using interceptors and mobile traffic surveillance vehicles in the last three months was Rs 40 lakh, of which Rs 30 lakh was from various places on Devanahalli Road, he said. Besides Mr Yeddyurappa, home minister V.S. Acharya and DGP R. Srikumar were present at the ceremony.
