Complete with see saw and swings a children's park in Defence Colony has been lying in disuse for almost six months, because dirty sewage water flows into it.

The park is maintained by the residents of the colony. They installed various play equipment in the park about a year ago to give the children a good time.

But this problem has left the park deserted.

The residents are tired of complaining to the civic authorities.

“We have been complaining for a long time, but have not got a permanent solution to the problem,’ says Colonel Mannar, secretary, Defence Colony Residents’ Association (DECORA).

The residents have complained to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB), both through letters and meeting officials.

“These pipes are about 40 years old and as they are not made of plastic, they are worn out. Water leaks from them continuously. Once in a while BWSSB staff come and rectify minor leaks, but that doesn't solve the problem,” the colonel adds.

The residents have been demanding that the pipes in the park and its surround ings be re-laid but there has been no response.

“Our children have not been able to play in the park for over six months,” the colonel says.

When contacted, BWSSB chief engineer, maintenance, P. Venkat Raju, said, “The water must be overflowing for some reason. I will get it checked at the earliest and rectify the problem soon.” Jyothi Sarath, park incharge, Defence Colony Residents’ Association, and a resident of the area, said:

“We as members of this association and residents of this area are maintaining the park and have invested so much in the play equipment. But now they will all rust if they are not used for long. I have sent emails to the BWSSB, but there has not even been an acknowledgement so far.” When asked about the condition of the park, George, security guard at the park said: “During heavy rains the park becomes so bad that it impossible to even walk in its grounds. It is sad to see that despite this being such a beautiful park with so much equipment, the children can’t play here due to the dirty water.”
