: It will be a record of sorts for BBMP when it completes work on a pedestrian underpass at Chalukya Junction in 24 hours on Monday morning.
The pedestrian underpass, built at a cost of Rs 45 lakh, will connect the Legislators home and LRDE giving much needed relief to the public, especially children of Sophia School.
After receiving brickbats from the public for failing to complete the Cauvery Junction underpass within 72 hours, the BBMP is set to complete the pedestrian underpass in a day.
There has been a long pending demand for a pedestrian underpass from the traffic police and people.
With this, the hassle of waiting for the traffic to come to a standstill for pedestrians and for vehicles to move smoothly without having to worry about people crossing the road has ended, said BBMP chief engineer (Major roads) K.S. Krishna Reddy.
Traffic was diverted on Sunday to help complete the work within the deadline. Vehicles will be allowed on the stretch from Monday morning, he added.
“Work on the underpass began at 11 pm on Saturday. With the underpass, people need not wait for the signal to change. After the road widening is over, traffic flow will be unhindered,” he said.
But public commuting on Race Course Road and Raj Bhavan Road were put to inconvenience on a weekend due to the work.
Motorists on Raj Bhavan Road were caught by surprise by the traffic diversion. The stretch from the Raj Bhavan entrance to Basaveshwara circle was closed for traffic from Sunday morning.
Vehicles coming from Raj Bhavan road had to moved in front of the planetarium and take a left turn near Basava Bhavan.
Traffic police said the BBMP is expected to finish the underpass work by Monday morning and the traffic diversion will end.
“The underpass will provide a safe path for pedestrians from the main junction. This will also cut down waiting time for vehicles since pedestrian movement will be restricted to the underpass,” said a traffic officer.
