Furnish info on landfill sites, HC tells BBMP

Furnish info on landfill sites, HC tells BBMP
Bangalore, DHNS:
The High Court has directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to furnish information regarding the landfill sites that have been identified.

Hearing a petition by BBMP waste disposal contractors B R Ganesh and others, the Court came down heavily on the BBMP, stating that just claiming that land identified for waste disposal is insufficient, and directed the officials to furnish the details, like the location and capacity of the sites identified.

The petitioners, contractors engaged in the collection and disposal of waste, had moved the High Court after a mob at Doddaballapur had burnt a vehicle carrying the waste to be disposed.

In their submission, the petitioners had said that the City generates 3,500 tonnes of waste every day, but the capacity of the site at Mavallipura is just 300 tonnes.

Disposal of waste at Gundalli, another site near Doddaballapur, has run into rough weather following public protest.

The petitioners pointed out that a driver was assaulted and a vehicle burnt down by the furious mob, when it was on its way to Gundalli. In spite of a complaint to the BBMP in this regard, no action had been taken, they said.
