BANGALORE: A new fleet of white taxis rolled on to Bangalore roads on Thursday to cater to the burgeoning tourist traffic.

The 100-strong fleet of white taxis, sporting the brand name "Karnataka Taxi", was flagged off by tourism minister Janardhan Reddy.

The new taxi service is an initiative of the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC).

A hundred more taxis will join the fleet soon. "Around 500 taxis will be inducted into the service over a period of one year for the benefit of tourists visiting Bangalore," Reddy said.

The KSTDC initiative aims to address the problem of unemployment faced by the cabbies who were operating from the now defunct HAL Airport.

Priced at Rs 15 per km, the taxi service can be availed at your doorstep on calling 080-42525555. Fitted with electronic meters, the new taxis will provide free drinking water and an informative booklet on Karnataka.
