Three new Doberman puppies are being trained by the Audugodi dog squad. Their mission: Sniff out narcotics on passengers flying out of the city. All three will be on duty at Bengaluru International Airport where cases of narcotics smuggling have been detected lately.
BIAL hopes the addition of the puppies to its dog squad will help it keep a check on drug smugglers. “Of the three new puppies, one is just 40 days old and the others are two months old,” said an officer of the police dog squad.
According to their trainer the three new Doberman pups which are female, react and obey commands more quickly than male dogs, which is important when dealing with narcotics being smuggled out of the city.
“Soon after the pups are trained they will be exclusively used at BIA. Till then the police dogs we have now will be on high alert round-the-clock,” said a senior police officer.
Once the police purchases ten more puppies, all to guard BIA, Bengaluru will surpass New Delhi and have the most number of trained police dogs in the country.
At present the Delhi police has at least 53 dogs, while Bengaluru has around 40. Of these, 22 are trained to detect explosives. The city is feeling the need for more sniffer dogs after the series of bomb blasts that hit it recently. The police plans to soon set up a police dog squad centre in Thanisandra and a dog centre on Mysore Road.
