People will soon be wooed by street plays and various kinds of road shows to use the Traffic Transit Management Centers where they can park their vehicles and take public transport to their places of work or elsewhere.

The BMTC is hoping the road shows will invite international players to get involved in the TTMC projects. The problem, however, is that all such players currently need to be registered with the PWD and the CPWD, which is complicating matters. The BMTC is in the process of having this clause removed.

The bus terminals at the TTMCs come equipped with platforms, bus bays, public conveniences, infor mation systems and security. Of the 45 planned for the city, 10 TTMCs are either nearing completion or are ready for inauguration. They are being constructed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Four of the TTMCs at Jayanagar 4th block, Koramangala, Vijaynagar and Shanthinagar have already been completed while the one at Dairy Circle is nearly ready. Other 35 TTMCs which are being built under the PPP model will be in the outskirts of the city and work on them will begin soon.

According to sources, most of the international players who have shown interest in the projects are wondering why the TTMC at Shantinagar, which is ready for use, has not become popular.

“Not many people are seen making use of the Shantinagar terminal. This is mainly due to the wrong selection of the location. It is right next to a bus depot and except for one theatre and a few hotels in the area there is not much of commercial activity around,” explains a BMTC officer.

The authorities are hoping that there will be more takers for the TTMCs in Jayanagar and Koramangala. But there could be problems here too.

“The TTMC in Jayanagar is very small. It will not hold all the traffic in the area. The authorities need to ensure that the entrance and exit points are not small causing inconvenience to commuters who go there to park their vehicles,” says a resident of Jayanagar.

The warning is clear: Planning is one aspect the BMTC will have to give more thought to when constructing the other terminals if it doesn’t want yet another good idea to be defeated by lack of vision.
