Bangalore: Following the government’s decision to make installation of speed governors mandatory in all commercial vehicles before Septemberend, the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association has called for an indefinite strike of trucks carrying construction material from Saturday. The strike is also aimed to put forth their demand of legalising sand mining.
After a discussion on Thursday afternoon on the issue, association president Shanmugappa said: “There are about 7.25 lakh vehicles under the association and all will remain off the roads from September 30, protesting the speed governor rule.’’
On the issue of illegal sand mining, association president G R Shanmugappa said: “We have been requesting to legalise sand mining but the pleas have fallen on deaf ears. To get illegal sand inside the city, several people pay bribes to the authorities in lakhs per month. This will stop once sand mining becomes legal.’’
According to him, the city needs about 3,000 loads of sand every day due to the booming construction industry. From Saturday, lorries carrying construction material like sand, stones and other items will not enter the city.
