LPG: Auto owners move court

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Autorickshaw unions and some autorickshaw drivers have petitioned the Karnataka High Court against the rule making it mandatory for them to install liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) kits in autorickshaws if they are to be registered.

In their petitions, the autorickshaw unions said the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) had passed orders sometime ago that autorickshaws would be registered only if they were fitted with LPG kits. They said fitting LPG kits was not only expensive but that LPG was not easily available in all petrol stations in the city.

They said only a handful of bunks had LPG refuelling facilities. Citing some instances, they said autorickshaws in some localities had to wait for long hours for refuelling LPG.

They urged the court to quash the notification making LPG kits mandatory.

The court adjourned the case.

The Commissioner of Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) was present before the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday.

The court had sought his presence in a case relating to acquisition of land.

When the court sought to know the reaction of the KHB Commissioner to such complaints, he said the board would look into them and take a decision as per the law.

Justice S. Abdul Nazir, who is hearing the cases, adjourned the hearing.
