The Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s — better known as ‘Prachanda’ — visit threw traffic out of gear for a good part of the day on Wednesday as his convoy passed through the east and central parts of the city.

Traffic was hit on Outer Ring Road, Airport Road, Hosur Road and around Rajbhavan. Some schools on Sarjapura Road and Hosur Road reportedly let their students off early fearing they would get stuck in traffic jams.

The Nepal Prime Minister arrived in the city at around 11 am and his convoy passed through Suranjan Das Road to outer ring road, affecting office-goers as traffic on all connecting roads was stopped between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm at regular intervals. Later between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. homebound commuters were inconvenienced as the Nepal Prime Minister used Electronic City Road, Hosur Road and T Chowdaiah Road through Koramangala Inner Ring Road, Airport Road, Trinity Church Road, and Rajbhavan Road.

Motorists had to turn their ignitions off for 15 to 20 minutes at all the major junctions along these roads.

“There was a pile-up of vehicles on some roads for some time in the morning. However, the moment the convoy went past traffic returned to normal. Tough conditions existed on some roads where the convoy had to pass at least twice within a span of two to three hours,” a senior traffic official said. While traffic police say that they always try to plan VVIP movement in advance to make it less inconvenient for the public, every time a VVIP visits the city traffic goes out of control. “There are no alternative roads to reach Rajbhavan from Hal airport other than Indiranagar 100 ft road and Trinity Church, Dickenson and Manipal Centre Roads.

Similarly, Koramangala 80 Ft. Road, Koramangala Inner Ring Road, Sarjapur Road, Hosur Road and Electronic City Road are the only ones leading to IT majors. This results in a huge pile-up of vehicles on almost all cross roads and connecting roads,” the traffic officer explained.

There is more in store as the Nepal Prime Minister will be using Palace Road, Rajbhavan Road, Infantry Road, Cubbon Road and Airport Road to reach HAL airport on Thursday between 7.30 am and 9.30 am. Office goers may have to start earlier than usual to avoid morning traffic jams.
