One-way ticket!O

It’s a disease that’s now spreading to many other cities. The autos won’t agree to go anywhere, so you wonder why they stand out there in the first place. Then money is another issue. Abroad, at times the driver offers if you would prefer to go by the meter or pay lumpsum, which is a good bargain if you are going to be stuck in a traffic jam. Of course, here you are at their mercy. I think the best option is to introduce private transport systems.

Smitha Rao, dentist and model
Our autos reflect the laidback attitude of our city that seeps through every section of our society. And it’s frustrating. Just when it’s necessary, the auto will refuse to go to an area or charge more simply because its raining or that there’s a traffic jam! I don’t use the auto any more here but I do in Mumbai whenever I am visting there. It’s such a change with their attitude and efficiency. Things won’t improve here unless the traffic police jumps into action and that’s not going to happen until the autos stop paying off the cops.

One-ways help in ensuring free flow of traffic. But the public face a lot of problems due to these roads. It would be inane to say the authorities should widen the roads, because that is not easy. I feel it’s important to seek people’s views on such matters.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw
It’s very difficult to say whether the one-way roads are helpful or not. While some of them (one-ways) have been implemented in a planned manner, some are not. We must find a comprehensive solution to this matter.

Aditya, actor
Better traffic management is possible if the cab drivers, autorickshaw drivers and bus drivers follow lane discipline. They are known for breaking traffic rules. The penalty for breaking traffic rules should be maximum. Now, everyone knows he/she can break rules and get away by just paying Rs 100. One-way roads and other measures work only when drivers have a traffic sense.

Anand, actor
The traffic condition is deteriorating by the day. One-way roads can serve the purpose only if the citizens cooperate.

Guru Prasad, director
We should help the traffic police and comply with the traffic rules.

Mohammad Mansoor, Afghan student, Acharya College
One-way roads are good for smooth flow of traffic and the authorities should have more such roads. Sometimes, we face a lot of problems because of such roads, especially during peak hours. Still, I would say these are necessary.

Pradeep N, Executive, GE
One-ways can work only if the people cooperate. We also face problems when the police department makes some roads as one-ways without prior intimation.

Varsha Abhishek, housewife
I always try to avoid one-way roads as I always find them jam-packed. I can recall an incident in which we were taking a relative to a hospital, but the one-ways made our lives miserable. There should be more two-way roads than one-ways. And it’s better not to talk about one-ways during rains.

Sneha Nair, student, Shirdi Sai Engineering College
If you are travelling on a one-way road, most of the time you don’t reach your destination in time as the traffic is chaotic. I think St John’s Road is the worst one-way road in the city.

Kaushik, student, R V College
One-way roads are good for commuters. But I hate to take a detour as that would mean a waste of fuel and time. I feel some of the one-way roads are unnecessary.
