Most B'loreans unhappy

Most B'loreans unhappy
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Hundred days is too short a period to judge a person or performance of a government. Still, the ruling BJP is creating hype about its own performance.
The Yeddyurappa government is coming out with a booklet on the promises it made during the post-budget and the implementation of the same.

But how does the people who brought the BJP to power think on the occasion? How the governance is being rated by Bangaloreans?

Deccan Herald posed three questions to a cross-section of Bangaloreans on the eve of BJP government completing its century. The questions were:

* How do you assess the performance of the BJP government in relation to Bangalore?

*Did you get to see and hear the BJP MLAs/MPs attending to civic work or at least in the areas which were affected by the recent rains?

*What should be the priority of your elected representatives, for the next 100 days?

Deccan Herald correspondent Rashmi R Hebbur, during her interactions with the citizens, found that the people wanted the government to be more active with focussed attention on improving the infrastructure in the capital. They wanted the government to speed up the work on the ongoing infrastructure projects like the Metro and improving basic civic amenities.

Many failed to see any positive changes after the BJP came to power. Yet, a few hoped for better days as the BJP is ‘just making a beginning’. When it comes to offering comments on the condition of roads and traffic congestion, the citizens minced no words to express their displeasure.

The recent rains and the havoc it created has left the residents in the City worried. Because the roads have turned worse. Many could not recollect seeing their elected representatives conducting field visit to the rain-hit areas or to check the condition of roads. They felt that politicians remained in their cosy home, while many parts were drowning.

Here are some of the reactions:

The condition of the City has got rather worse. I wonder whether the CM is there. During the recent rains, there was a lot of complaints regarding water logging in my area. During the previous government, some ministers had inspected the tank beds. But this time I did not see any MLA or minister making it to the affected areas. Permanent measures to prevent clogging of drains are necessary to check the flooding during rains.

When we look at the condition of roads and traffic, it looks like there is no change in governance. It is time for the government to begin serious work. The City needs more infrastructure for being called a metro. Traffic rules should be enforced seriously and the same should be monitored too. Public transport should improve and power cuts should be minimised. The roads should be pot-hole free and well lit. Influx of people could be checked into Bangalore if other districts are industrially developed. There should be a brake on mushrooming of illegal layouts.

Roads and water supply need serious attention. Instead of asphalting the roads over and again in posh localities, the government must look at other areas like Uttarahalli and Puttenahalli. Recent hike in bus fare has become a burden on the poor. Cost of living is on the rise. The government must think of the welfare of the poor.

The government doesn’t exist for Bangalore. The City has not benefited in the last 100 days. The previous government never bothered about the City’s development and the situation is the same now. The condition of roads have not improved. The work on Benniganahalli fly over and Malleswaram fly over is yet to be completed.
The agenda for the government is simple - take care of the welfare of the people. But the government is not bothered. For instance, the recent rains showed that the government has no planning for the city. The ministers were busy with ‘Operation Kamala’ and visiting the US.

Hundred days is too short time to judge a government. Restriction on running dance bars, bars and pubs till late in the evening is a welcome measure. The government has sanctioned four new mono rail projects for the city. In the coming days, I expect construction of more fly overs and improvement of roads.

When it comes to the City’s development, the government is just making the beginning. Hopefully it will do something good. The government seems to be more oriented towards rural development. Similar attention should be paid to urban areas too.
-Praveen, gym owner, Padmanabhanagar resident

The government cannot be held responsible for the heavy rains and the havoc it created. Water logging is a problem in low-lying areas, for which the land developers have to be blamed. Hundred days it too small a period to analyse the government’s performance. It is focussing on development activities but not on the City’s improvement.
